Apple has released a small but important security update versioned as iOS 9.3.4 for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.
The iOS 9.3.4 update “provides an important security update” and is recommended by Apple for all users to install on their device running a version of iOS 9. Presumably users who are running iOS 10 betas are not impacted by whatever security issue exists in iOS 9.3.3 or earlier, and therefore don’t need to worry about any particular security patch beyond installing regular updates as they become available.
Multiple reports indicate that iOS 9.3.4 patches the Pangu jailbreak for iOS 9.3.3, thereby preventing a device on iOS 9.3.4 from being jailbroken by that utility. It’s unclear if that is the primary security update included in the iOS 9.3.4 release.
Updating to iOS 9.3.4
The easiest way to download and install iOS 9.3.4 is through the Over-the-Air update mechanism on an iPhone or iPad running an earlier version of iOS system software.
- Back up the device before installing any software update, either to iCloud or iTunes
- Open the “Settings” app and go to “General” and then to “Software Update”
- Choose “Download and Install”
The OTA update is quite small weighing around 20mb to 50mb, depending on the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch model, and should therefore update fairly quickly for most devices.
iOS updates usually go without a hitch, but it’s good practice to backup beforehand anyway. There are limited reports of the initial process being stuck on “Verifying update” which can be fixed easily. Additionally some users trying to install iOS 9.3.4 may encounter an “This Device isn’t Eligible for the Requested Build” error message, which is generally remedied by simply waiting a while and trying to reinstall again later, or by using iTunes to install the software update.
