Did you know that you can set a GIF as your iPhone or iPad wallpaper that animates with a press? Sure, Apple doesn’t make it possible for you to use them as they are, but you can make use of a workaround to enjoy your favorite animated GIF right on your iPhone lock screen.

- You can set it either as your home screen wallpaper, lock screen wallpaper, or both. Choose your preferred option to complete the procedure.
That was the last step. You’ve successfully learned how to use GIFs as wallpapers on your iOS/iPadOS device, just make sure to convert them to Live Photos first.
One important thing to note here is that your new wallpaper will only animate in the lock screen, it will stay as a still image on the home screen. You’ll also need to long-press on the display for the wallpaper animation to play. Therefore, if you were expecting your GIF to loop automatically whenever you’re on the lock screen, we hate to break it to you that this is as close as you can get for now.
Some of you may have tried to set a GIF as your wallpaper directly from the wallpaper selection menu. Unfortunately, doing this will only set a still version of your GIF as the wallpaper and it doesn’t animate when you press on the screen. Only Live Photos do the animation thing and that’s exactly why it’s important to convert the GIF first. Similarly, you can set videos as wallpapers on your iPhone and iPad too.
