VR camera manufacturer Kandao developed an advanced algorithm that can add virtual frames to existing videos thus allowing the creation of more realistic (non-choppy) slow-motion videos using the software alone.
Typically when we want to show something in slow-motion we need to shoot a lot more frames – 60 is typically considered to be a necessary minimum but for faster moving subjects 120 fps might be more appropriate and of course if you want to see super-fast action you might need dedicated high-speed cameras that can slow down even a shooting bullet at tens of thousands of frames per second.
The algorithm developed by Kandao and shown in action in the video above takes a normal 30 fps video and by adding virtual frames in a realistic way turns it into a smooth 300 fps video (you can see a comparison in the video between a normal software 10x slowdown and what the AI based Kandao algorithm can do).
At the moment this technology is only offered for use with Kandao VR cameras but according to reports it should be available at some later date for other cameras as well and if it can truly deliver on its promise (without any significant downsides – such as artifacts, resolution limitation etc.) it can be a real game changer in video production.
