Laws of Light: Captivating Sphere and Cube Demonstrations

On this series of videos, photographer Jay P. Morgan from the website the Slanted Lens looks at some of the basic principles of lighting and how they effects different shapes such as round objects and cubes.

According to Morgan the principles he is covering in this series were taught to him at Art Center College of Design by Charlie Potts, who was the head of the photo department there. You can’t change them. You can’t make them go away. But you can control them and use them to your advantage.

Both videos look at the way light effects shapes (sphere/cube) from different angles this is quite basic but extremely important to understand (this is actually a great exercise if you are starting in photography or videography).

The second video looks at the same principles but this time on the effects on a cube

We would also highly recommend that you watch these two other videos which are also sort of introductions to lighting which we published a few years back –  Basic Portrait Lighting Techniques and A Look at the Five Main Portraiture Lighting Patterns.
