Master Portrait Lighting: Pro Techniques with Westcott Ice Light and Barndoors

On this video by Westcott, pro portrait photographer Jim Schmelzer discusses a few ways of working with the Ice Lights and the Ice Light Barndoors for shooting portraits.

Schmelzer goes over the setup he prepared for the shoot which includes 4 lights all around the model. The first is used as a fill light front the front (horizontally) not at full power. The main light is placed in a butterfly position. The two other lights are placed in the back and used to light her hair and side for a more dramatic look.

If you want to make the image more dramatic, using the barndoors to focus the light on part of your subject (such as the face or eyes) will make sure to catch your viewer’s attention to this area.

We have already looked at the Ice Light a couple of times in the past including on Jen Rozenbaum’s behind the scenes video.

As always, you can find many more lighting videos on our photography lighting section, here on LensVid.
