Mastering the Quality of Light in Photography: Insights from Mark Wallace

On this Adorama video, photographer Mark Wallace takes a look at several basic concepts in lighting your subject including the size of your light, hard and soft light, the angle of your light and more.

So what makes a good light? the answers depends on what you want to achieve with your light. In some shots you might want a dark moody look with lots of contrast but in others you might be looking for for softer more even light. On this video Wallace takes a look at the theory (and practice) that will help you achieve both results.

There are many factors which effect the quality of light – besides the power and color of your light, you need to look at how far away your light is from your subject and how big it is, the angle of the light (or your camera) towards the subject.

This isn’t the first time that we are looking at some of these concepts, only recently we published videographer’s Freddie Wong from RocketJump video where he shares some ideas on good lighting and how you can use effective lighting to create a mood and style for your videos.
