In this guide, we explain what a flicker effect is and walk you through three reliable methods to apply it across popular video editing platforms.
A flicker effect creates abrupt brightness shifts between frames, mimicking the glitches seen in early CRT displays. While traditionally black‑and‑white, you can craft the effect in any color palette to match your creative vision.
Today, flicker sequences are a staple on TikTok and Instagram, accentuating key moments and grabbing viewers’ attention.
Add Flicker Effect to Video with FlexClip
FlexClip is an intuitive online video editor that lets you build a flicker effect manually, even though it doesn’t offer a dedicated tool.
Click on the Create a Video button below and follow the steps below. FlexClip also provides professionally‑made free video templates you can customize.
Step 1
Go to the Media section, click Local Files to select any video from your computer and upload. You can also upload videos from your phone or cloud services.
Step 2
Drag the uploaded video to the timeline using the Add as Scene button. Add as many clips as you need.
Step 3
Move the playhead to where the flicker should start. Use the Scissor icon to split the clip. Splitting every 0.2–0.5 s yields a natural flicker.
Step 4
Click the + icon to insert a new clip with a solid background. The default is black and 5 s long; change the duration to 0.1 s and adjust the background color if desired. Duplicate this clip as many times as needed.
Step 5
Insert the short clips between your split segments to create the flicker sequence.
Step 6
Export the finished video. FlexClip also generates a short link for easy sharing and offers one‑click export to YouTube, TikTok, and other social platforms.
Add Flicker Effect to Video with CapCut
CapCut is a free, feature‑rich app that’s become essential for TikTok creators. The app runs on both mobile and desktop.
Step 1
Launch CapCut and tap Create a New Project.
Step 2
Drag and drop your video onto the timeline.
Step 3
Navigate to Effects > Video Effects > Night Club and locate the Flicker effect. Tap Download to add it to your library.
Step 4
Drag the Flicker effect onto the timeline at the desired start point. Adjust its duration by dragging the edges.
Step 5
Preview the result. When satisfied, export the video or share it directly to TikTok with one click.
Note: CapCut’s built‑in Flicker effect offers limited speed control and may not provide the intensity you need.
Add Flicker Effect to Video with Premiere Pro
Adobe Premiere Pro is the industry standard for professional video editing. Though it comes with a subscription fee, it offers unparalleled flexibility.
Step 1
Start a new project and import your clip into the timeline.
Step 2
Right‑click in the Project panel, select New Item > Adjustment Layer, and place the layer above your clip.
Step 3
Position the adjustment layer at the point where you want the flicker to begin. Extend or shorten it as needed.
Step 4
Open the Effects panel, search for Strobe Light, and drag it onto the adjustment layer.
In the Effect Controls panel, set Strobe Duration to 0.1 s and Strobe Period to 0.2 s. Adjust these values until the flicker feels right for your footage.
Step 5
Once you’re happy with the look, export the final video.
