At this year’s NAB trade show, Sony unveiled the new α7S, a full‑frame camera that raises the bar for both stills and video. Built on the proven α7/α7R platform, the A7S adds a high‑performance BIONZ X processor and a 12.2‑megapixel Exmor CMOS sensor designed for extreme low‑light performance.
4K Video with Full‑Pixel Read‑out
The A7S is the first camera to capture 4K (3840×2160) by reading every pixel of the full‑frame sensor—no pixel binning, no cropping, no line‑skipping. The data is sent to an external recorder or streamed via HDMI at up to 60 fps. In XAVC S format, it delivers 50 Mbps of video that meets broadcast‑grade standards.
Additional video options include Full HD at 60 p, 60 i, 30 p and 24 p to an SD card, as well as 720 p at 120 fps for 5× slow‑motion. The camera also offers a crop mode (APS‑C) that expands the frame for a super‑35 mm look.
Unmatched ISO Range and Dynamic Range
With an ISO range of 50–409,600, the A7S rivals professional DSLR performance while keeping noise exceptionally low. On‑sensor technology extends the dynamic range across the entire ISO spectrum, delivering rich detail in both highlights and shadows.
S‑Log2 is available for color grading, and the new XAVC S workflow replaces the older AVCHD/MP4 codecs for lower compression and higher quality.
Pro‑Level Features for Videographers

The A7S plugs into Sony’s expanding E‑mount system—over 54 lenses across A and E mounts, including premium Carl Zeiss and G‑Series models. Sony is also introducing a new 28‑135 mm F4 power‑zoom lens designed specifically for the camera’s movie‑ready features.

While pricing has yet to be announced, the A7S is expected to command a premium over the standard α7 models due to its advanced cinema‑grade capabilities.
