The Sony RX100 II remains a benchmark in the compact camera market, yet one of its most frequently cited drawbacks is the rapid loss of light at full zoom. With its 28‑100mm (equivalent) lens, the aperture drops from a bright f/1.8 to a comparatively narrow f/4.9, which can compromise low‑light performance and depth‑of‑field control.
A newly spotted Sony Japan patent details a 10‑36mm f/1.8‑2.8 lens designed for a 1‑inch sensor. Because a 1‑inch sensor has a 3.75× crop factor, that focal range translates to the 28‑100mm equivalent used in the RX100 II. Importantly, the maximum aperture remains f/2.8 at the telephoto end, rather than falling to f/4.9.
Should Sony bring this lens to market, users could enjoy a consistently bright aperture throughout the zoom range, improving performance in low‑light situations and providing greater creative control over background blur.
However, it is essential to view patent filings as speculative rather than definitive. The language of patents, especially those filed in a foreign language, can be ambiguous, and the existence of a defensive patent does not guarantee that a product will reach the shelves. Sony has filed for five lens patents in this category, three of which align with the 28‑100mm f/1.8‑2.8 specification.
