This morning Leica announced the Leica SL2, a powerful full-frame mirrorless camera built around a 47-megapixel CMOS sensor. The follow-up to 2015’s Leica SL features improved ergonomics and a simplified three-button layout. Here is what else you need to know about it:
- Suspended sensor that adjusts position to compensate for shake for 5-axis in-camera image stabilization, great for manual focus M mount lenses
- 47-megapixel CMOS sensor
- 14-bit color depth
- ISO sensitivity up to 50,000
- New Maestro III processor for faster autofocus and lag-free shutter release
- New Smart AF mode switches between focus priority and shutter release priority
- Can shoot at 10 frames per second with focal plane shutter, 20 frames per second with the electronic shutter
- 5.76 megapixel electronic viewfinder
- 187 megapixel image capture in multishot mode
- Redesigned camera body with substantial improvements to handgrip
- IP54 certification for shooting in the elements
- Updates to menu make shooting with the SL2 similar to the M and Q systems
- 3.2-inch touchscreen LCD with resolution of 2.1 megapixels
- Customizable buttons
- Dedicated menus for video and photo shooting
- Features the L-mount Alliance bayonet mount making it natively compatible with SL and TL Leica lenses, as well as L-mount lenses from Sigma and Panasonic
- M, S, and R system lens compatibility via adapter
- Two UHS-II SD card slots
- 60 frames per second in Cine 4K, 180 frames per second in Full-HD
- Built in headphone and mic jack and HDMI connector for external monitors
- Weighs 1.8 lbs without battery
It’s been four years since the release of original SL camera and the mirrorless market has changed a lot in that time, so it makes sense that the SL2 features so many substantial updates. The SL2 will be available just before the holidays on November 21 for $5,995.
