For years, Leica’s interchangeable‑lens offerings have been dominated by the revered M‑series. The brand’s newest entrant, the Leica T, signals a bold shift toward a more compact, user‑friendly system.
Designed in partnership with Audi, the T’s chassis begins as a single block of aluminum, giving it a solid, minimalist feel that echoes Leica’s iconic design language.
At its core is a 16.2‑megapixel APS‑C‑sized CMOS sensor. Despite speculation linking the camera to Panasonic’s Micro‑4/3 platform, Leica’s long history with non‑full‑frame sensors—such as the APS‑H sensor in the M8 and the APS‑C sensor in the X2—shows the brand is well‑versed in this format.
The camera does not include a built‑in viewfinder, but an optional electronic viewfinder accessory is available for a premium price.
Leica has introduced a brand‑new T lens mount. The first lenses announced are the 18‑56mm F/3.5‑5.6 ASPH kit lens and the 23mm Summicron‑T F/2, which provides a field of view roughly equivalent to a 35mm lens on a full‑frame sensor. Future lenses such as the Super‑Vario‑Elmar‑T 11‑23mm F/3.5‑4.5 ASPH and the 55‑135mm F/3.5‑4.5 ASPH are slated for release at Photokina in September.
Design-wise, the T prioritizes simplicity. The front of the body hosts two control dials, a video record button, a pop‑up flash, a hot shoe, and the shutter button. The rear displays a 3.7‑inch LCD screen.
While the T represents a departure from Leica’s traditional lineup, it aligns closely with the brand’s ethos more than many past re‑brands have managed. An M‑adapter is also available, allowing M‑shooter enthusiasts to use the T as a lighter, more portable alternative when they wish to forego the pricier M or M Monochrom.
We’ve had the opportunity to test the camera briefly, and it feels exceptionally robust. Full laboratory testing will reveal how it measures up in terms of image quality.
Price-wise, the Leica T is positioned at the upper end of the mirrorless market, retailing for $2,000.
