Pro Tip: Edit JPEG Images in Camera Raw Using Photoshop CC | LensVid

Today we continue our series of video editing tips here on LensVid in cooperation with PSkiss – a developer of Photoshop and Camera Raw filters, profiles and presets. This time we take a look at the basics of working with JPEG files in Adobe Camera RAW filter inside Photoshop.

Before Photoshop CC there was no simple way to work on a JPEG image inside Camera RAW, however for some time now Adobe offers inside Photoshop CC the option to work on any image (JPEG or otherwise) with Camera RAW as a filter.

To do this you can just go to filter>camera raw and open your image, but as Tal Ninio suggest in this video, a better way is to do this is to first turn the image that you are working on to a smart object – go to the layer panel>right click and press “convert to smart object” and now you can work on the image in a non destructive way (as well as “re-edit” it with ease).

What are the advantages of working on a file in Camera RAW? here are a few points:

  • Easy and quick access to changing the exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows etc.
  • Quick access to curves, detail, split tones, sharpness
  • One layer workflow (keeping things simple – if this is what you want).

What you are going to miss are the camera profiles and the crop tool (which you can use inside Photoshop). What you also miss which Ninio didn’t mention contrary to actual RAW is the increased dynamic range of the image (this is why we always suggest that you do shoot in RAW).
