Transform Day to Night (and Night to Day) in Filmora 11 with Boris FX

Step‑by‑Step Guide

Master the art of turning daylight into twilight and vice versa using Filmora 11’s timeline, Boris FX, BCC, and built‑in effects. Follow this workflow for professional results.

1. Import Your Footage
Drag the clip you wish to edit onto the Filmora 11 timeline. For illustration, a rainforest scene will serve as the base layer.

2. Add the “Day‑for‑Night” Effect
From the Effects panel, locate Boris FX and place the Day‑for‑Night effect above your footage. The preset instantly casts a nocturnal glow.

3. Fine‑Tune the Preset
Open the preset drop‑down and select a light setting that feels slightly intense. Adjust the sliders in the Color section—increase blur and tint to deepen the night look. Desaturate the hue, then tweak brightness and contrast in the Light section.

4. Darken the Scene
In the Darken section, set the desired darkness level, sensitivity, and soften the image to blend the effect naturally.

5. Layer BCC Mist for Atmospheric Depth
Place a BCC Mist effect on the top track and explore its Brightness, Blur X/Y, and Color sliders. Enable “Mix with Original” in the Matte section to preserve the underlying footage.

6. Add BCC Dual Gradient for Color Balance
Insert a BCC Dual Gradient above the Mist layer. Adjust Color 1, Color 2, and opacity to modulate the intensity of the night palette.

7. Insert BCC Lightening for Dynamic Highlights
Drop a BCC Lightening effect on the timeline, choose a preset, and set the number of lightning bolts, seed, and mix ratio to add dramatic flare.

8. Apply a Simple Vignette
Drag the Vignette effect onto the video to darken the edges, enhancing the nocturnal atmosphere.

9. Add Rain and Lightning for Realism
Search for “rain” in the Effects menu. Place the rain effect underneath the composite to avoid excessive filter stacking. Intermittently add lightning bursts for added drama.

10. Create a Day‑to‑Night Transition
Clear the timeline except the base video, then overlay the exported composite. Use the Animation panel to add keyframes and reverse them—this generates a smooth day‑to‑night transition.

11. Convert Day Footage to Night
Import a new clip with a clear subject. Repeat steps 2–4, selecting the “dark sky” preset for the Day‑for‑Night effect to emphasize darkness.

12. Refine with Luma Key
Duplicate the clip, apply the Luma Key effect, and set the threshold, contrast, and softness sliders. Hide the original video to preview the result.

13. Replace the Sky with a Night Background
From the Stock Media panel, find a night sky clip on Pixabay. Place it beneath the Luma‑keyed footage, mask it with a single‑line shape, rotate to align with the horizon, and invert the mask to reveal only the sky.

14. Blend and Adjust the Sky Layer
Increase the blur strength to merge the sky with the background. Use keyframes to move and scale the sky if the footage is handheld.

15. Enhance with a Blue‑Moon LUT
Apply a LUT effect, choose the Blue Moon preset, and lift the blue intensity. Return to the Day‑for‑Night effect to adjust color and contrast until the night feels cohesive.

16. Final Review
Play the full‑screen preview, fine‑tune any remaining color or contrast settings, and export the finished video.
