IBC 2018 Highlights: Top Updates & Announcements from Adobe, Blackmagic & More

Here are all the biggest updates and announcements from IBC Show 2018 in one convenient roundup, including news from Adobe, Blackmagic, and more.

Dubbed the “The World’s Most Influential Media, Entertainment & Technology Show,” the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) certainly delivered once again as it followed up its 50-year anniversary in 2017 with yet another awesome conference and exhibition this year in Amsterdam. Shutterstock was a proud participant and got some up-close looks at some breaking news hitting the film and video industry.

Let’s look at some of the biggest news and highlights, from Adobe’s Creative Cloud updates to Blackmagic’s powerful new RAW codec to some broadcast-ready cameras and camcorders from major brands like Sony and Canon.

Adobe Updates the Cloud

Once again, Adobe was a big-name headline at IBC 2018 with some very cool and very powerful updates to their popular Adobe Creative Cloud platform. For us filmmakers and video editors, the biggest news is the new Adobe Sensei, which uses some powerful new breakthroughs in artificial intelligence and machine learning to speed up and streamline animation. Adobe’s Project Rush was also unveiled as the “first all-in-one, cross-device video editing app designed specifically for online content creators” (from their press release). Up close, however, Project Rush looks like it will be a massively helpful and workflow-streamlining device once it makes it out of beta testing later this year. Here are some of the biggest highlights (but be sure to check out the full coverage on Adobe’s website here):

  • Adobe Sensei-powered animation.
  • New intelligent audio cleanup tools.
  • Updated selective color grading.
  • Advanced data-driven motion graphics templates.
  • End-to-end VR 180 support.
  • Project Rush Unveiling.

Blackmagic Wows Again

Blackmagic continues to dominate the biggest stages with big updates and ambitious new projects. IBC 2018 was no different — one of the biggest stories was Blackmagic’s new Blackmagic RAW codec, which utilizes a new advanced de-mosaic algorithm. This new codec is great news for videographers and filmmakers looking to shoot high-end feature films and television content with the highest standard of quality, bit depth, and dynamic range — while working with file sizes reportedly lower than traditional codecs (like ProRes RAW).

For those following Blackmagic closely in 2018, their new Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K (which you can read more about here on PremiumBeat) will not immediately feature Blackmagic RAW, but updates will include it in 2018. Camera News and Updates

While 2018 may be shaping up to be the year of the mirrorless camera, brands stuck to their broadcast guns at IBC this year with some important camera (and camcorder) announcements from the likes of Sony and Canon. 2018 will see the launch of Sony’s updated HDC family of live-production system cameras with the HDC-P50, HDC-3500, and the HDC-3170 — as well as their new affordable and compact 4K camcorder, the HXR-NX200. Canon, meanwhile, showcased their new XF705 Professional Camcorder with its 4K UHD image quality (up to 60fps) for all types of news, sports, and documentary production.
