Optimizing Videos for AI: Proven Strategies for ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, and More

Large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and Grok primarily interpret video content through textual cues. They can:

  • Extract insights from video transcripts.
  • Provide links to videos deemed relevant for a user’s query.
  • Analyze a video’s transcript and metadata when explicitly prompted.

In practice, LLMs process written language; they cannot yet parse moving images and audio streams directly. This limitation is largely due to the sheer data volume involved. For example, 100 words of plain HTML weigh roughly 0.8 KB, whereas the same content rendered as a 45‑second HD video occupies about 20 MB—roughly 25,000 times more data. Consequently, only specialized crawlers can currently dissect video files on demand, and general‑purpose crawlers still lack the capacity to do so for every video encountered.

Because of this, video optimization for LLMs must focus on the surrounding textual metadata. The key elements are:

Transcripts, Titles, and Descriptions

Every video should have a complete transcript, a clear title, and a detailed description that explains its content. These elements must be exposed directly in the page’s source—free from JavaScript wrappers or iframes—so that LLM crawlers can read them. Unfortunately, more than 95% of web videos rely on JavaScript or iframe delivery, which hides their metadata from many AI systems.

Wistia’s LLM‑friendly embeds address this issue by embedding the transcript as plain HTML text within the embed code and then using JavaScript to replace that text with the video player. This approach ensures that crawlers and users who cannot render video still receive the textual fallback.

For sites that embed YouTube videos, the same principle applies. YouTube’s iframe embeds are invisible to LLM crawlers, so the only reliable way for an AI to understand the video is to include the transcript as visible text on the page. Uploading accurate, multilingual transcripts to YouTube is essential, even though these transcripts will not be incorporated into the LLM’s general training set due to YouTube’s terms of service prohibiting bulk scraping.

What About Gemini’s Relationship with YouTube?

It is a common misconception that Google’s ownership of both Gemini and YouTube guarantees seamless integration. While Gemini may access a database of YouTube videos with additional metadata, its operation remains similar to other LLMs: it relies on web citations and references to identify relevant videos. The ranking of videos in search results does not automatically translate to the videos highlighted by Gemini.

Future Outlook: Will LLMs Directly Process Video Files?

Experts anticipate that, within the next few years, LLMs will acquire the computational power to interpret video content more like humans. However, whether this capability becomes mainstream depends on the incremental value it brings versus the processing cost. Current projections suggest that, by 2028, LLMs may be able to parse JavaScript in a manner comparable to Googlebot, and by 2031, they could routinely process encapsulated video files. Until then, the rule remains simple: if the content isn’t readable as text, it stays invisible to AI.
