When Canon unveiled the 70D, the industry buzzed over the new Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology, which dramatically improved live‑view focusing and video shooting. Now the company is extending this feature to its flagship C100 digital cinema camera—at a cost of $500 for the upgrade.

The Dual Pixel AF kit is slated for release in February 2014, and users can send their C100 in for professional installation. Canon’s press release promises roughly twice the autofocus speed, making the camera a more capable tool for filmmakers who prefer automated focus over manual adjustments.

While Canon hasn’t disclosed the full technical details, it appears the upgrade will keep the existing sensor but integrate the new autofocus electronics. This suggests a hardware‑level modification rather than a firmware tweak.

Investing $500 to enhance a $5,500 camera may seem steep, but it can be justified for professionals who need reliable autofocus during high‑pressure shoots. The question remains whether Canon will offer similar upgrades to other models in its lineup.

For those interested, contact Canon or your local dealer for more information on pricing, availability, and installation logistics.
