Canon’s flagship DSLR camera, the EOS-1D X Mark III, will be hitting the market by mid February for $6,500 (body only)—details that we’ve been anticipating since the development announcement was made last fall. It’s no surprise that we’re getting more information about the camera a few months before the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, since a camera like this is aimed at top-level pros.
Canon built the camera around a new 20.1 megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor with a newly designed High Detail Low-Pass Filter; it features a DIGIC X image processor and 191-point optical viewfinder with an AF system that uses deep learning to track a subject’s face and head. Here is what else we know about this powerhouse of a camera:
- ISO range of 100-102400
- New Smart Controller built into the AF-On button for faster auto-focus point selection
- Dual Pixel CMOS AF in Live View mode covers 90 percent of the image area
- Shoots up to 16fps in optical viewfinder, up to 20fps in Live View with mechanical or silent shutter
- Max buffer of 1000 images
- Dual CFexpress card slots
- Capable of shooting 12-bit 5.5K Raw video, 4K 60p video using full sensor width in Canon Log with 10-bit 4:2:2
- HDMI terminal can transmit 4K 60p data to a display or external recorder
- 191 AF points, with 155 cross-type points
- Face, head and eye detection AF tracking in Live View
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity
- Menu has a dedicated Network tab for built-in gigabit Ethernet and file transfer to FTP servers
- Faster speeds when using the Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E9 or with the built-in gigabit ethernet port
- Capable of capturing 10-bit using the HEIF (High-Efficiency Image File) file format for images with a wider dynamic range and greater color representation compared to 8-bit JPEG
