Should Motion Designers Learn 3D? Why Yes – Casual Friday Insights

In today’s episode of ‘Casual Friday’, I try to answer the question if Motion Designers should learn 3D.

If you asked me ..the answer is clearly ‘yes’. BUT you don’t have to have 3D in your toolbelt to pursue a viable career in Motion Design. You can basically break it down into 2 thoughts:

…Are you aiming for an industry path where you can expect to be part of a production pipeline? If so you should consider the respective industry standard. Which is not always the best choice…it’s just the software that has been established as the tool of choice over years. In Motion Design for instance I would argue that the tool of choice is Cinema4D.

However, free tools like Blender have become very powerful alternatives to paid programs and it’s becoming more and more popular even among professional 3D artists. If I would start doing 3D today…I have to admit I would go for Blender. It’s free, it’s very powerful and you now have great learning resources for that software.

There are still good reasons to stick with programs like Cinema4D. That may change in the future. I don’t know. Let me know what you think about this topic in the comments.
