Rian Johnson Shares His Debut Journey: From 'Brick' Script to Screen

In an interview with Creative Screenwriting, Johnson detailed the intricate process of bringing his first feature film, "Brick," from script to screen. Here's a summary of his approach:

1. The Original Idea:

- The inspiration for "Brick" came from Johnson's love for noir classics and wanting to explore a high school setting with that aesthetic.

2. Writing the Script:

- He started by creating character sketches and then developed the plot around them, weaving in the noir elements while maintaining a coming-of-age story at its core.

3. Getting Financing:

- The script caught the attention of a producer who saw Johnson's potential, but finding financing was still challenging due to the unconventional nature of the project.

4. Pre-Production:

- Johnson approached friends and collaborators to join the team. He also secured the participation of several talented young actors who were drawn to the uniqueness of the story.

5. Rehearsing the Script:

- Extensive script rehearsals were conducted with the actors. Johnson used this opportunity to ensure the actors deeply understood their characters and the world of the film.

6. Guerrilla Filmmaking:

- Due to budget limitations, they adopted a guerrilla filmmaking style. This included shooting in real locations, using practical effects, and utilizing available resources.

7. Editing and Post-Production:

- Johnson worked with his editor, Bob Ducsay, to construct the film's unique structure and pacing, which contributed to its distinct rhythm and style.

8. Sound Design and Music:

- Johnson collaborated with sound designer Ren Klyce and composer Nathan Johnson (not related) to create an immersive soundscape and score that amplified the film's atmosphere and tension.

9. Distribution:

- After the indie film's successful festival run, it was picked up by Focus Features, ensuring a wider theatrical release.

Johnson's approach reflects his dedication to storytelling and his ability to make the most of limited resources. "Brick" went on to gain critical acclaim and paved the way for Johnson's subsequent success as a filmmaker.
