NAB 2019 Pre-Show Guide: Must-See Events, Booths & Locations in Las Vegas

NAB 2019 is rapidly approaching. If you’re going to make the trip to Vegas to join the conference, check out some of these can’t-miss events and booths.

NAB is one of the biggest events for filmmakers and broadcasters in the world. If you’ve been there before, you know that it’s easy to get lost in the massive Las Vegas Convention Center. And with so much going on, it’s hard to make time for everything. So we’ve assembled some can’t-miss events and booths to check out at NAB 2019.


Editing Into The Spider-Verse

This moderated conversation will dive into the fascinating process of editing an animated film. Sarah Cole (assistant editor) and Robert Fisher Jr. (lead editor) will discuss their roles in creating one of the best animated movies of 2018.

After Effects Essentials for Video Editors

Sometimes it’s scary to make the jump into After Effects — even for a seasoned editor. Once you get comfortable using the Premiere UI, After Effects looks like a completely different beast. In this workshop, you’ll learn about color techniques, tracking, and keying from Eran Stern of SternFX.

In-Depth: Mastering Color in Adobe Premiere Pro

With the advent of Adobe Premiere’s new Essential Color workspace, it’s good to get a walkthrough of all of the new features. Abba Shapiro of Abba Shapiro Consulting will be guiding you through this colorful world, including info on the following:

  1. How to read video scopes to better judge and correct your video.
  2. How to perform basic corrections, such as improving color balance, contrast, and the dynamic range of your video clips.
  3. Understanding how to use the new Color Match and Hue Saturation Curve features in the Lumetri Color Panel.
  4. The difference between applying corrections to Sequence vs. Master clips.
  5. How to apply and work with LUTs — LookUp Tables — to quickly balance Log footage.
  6. How to create and save custom Lumetri effects.

DP Track: Advanced Camera Techniques: Cameras, Crew, and On-Set Workflows

AbelCine instructors will guide you through a full-day course jam-packed with information about on-set roles and positions and the latest camera workflows — as well as getting you the skills you need to start working on set. It’s like film school, but condensed into 10 hours.

Keynote Address: The Making of Apollo 11 by Todd Douglas Miller

If you’ve had a chance to check out one of the most visually stunning documentaries in recent history, then you have to check out Todd Douglas Miller, the director of Apollo 11, give his keynote address about the process behind making the film. Miller and his team pieced this documentary together using never-before-seen 65mm footage discovered in the national archives, which his team digitally transferred into 8K footage.

How Videogames Are Changing the Way We Make Cinema

As video games are becoming one of the hottest storytelling media — with completely immersive graphics — it’s no wonder the film industry and VFX studios are taking notes. This session will discuss how studios are using video game technology to create pre-vis artwork — and even live content using video game engines.

Blackmagic always has something up their sleeve for NAB week. This year may play out a bit differently, since we just got their new Blackmagic RAW and the unveiling of the URSA Mini Pro 4.6K G2. They will most likely have a prototype for you to check out, and some of their other gear that you can set your eyes on. They are also really nice dudes — we like them.
