Master Green Screen Keying in After Effects: Step-by-Step Guide

1. Import Your Footage

- Open Adobe After Effects.

- Import your green screen footage into After Effects by dragging and dropping it into the Project panel or clicking File > Import > File.

- Double-click on the footage in the Project panel to open it in the Composition panel.

2. Create a New Solid Layer

- Click the "Layer" button in the Timeline panel and select "New" > "Solid."

- In the "Solid Settings" dialog box, set the color to green and click "OK."

- Drag the solid layer below your green screen footage in the Timeline panel.

3. Apply the Keylight Effect

- Click on the green screen footage layer in the Timeline panel.

- Click the "Effects" button in the Toolbar and go to "Keying" > "Keylight."

- Drag and drop the Keylight effect onto your green screen footage layer.

4. Adjust the Keylight Effect Settings

- In the "Effect Controls" panel, adjust the following settings to key out the green screen:

- Screen Color: Click the eyedropper tool and click on the green screen background to sample the color.

- Screen Tolerance: Adjust the tolerance to remove as much of the green background as possible without affecting the edges of your subject.

- Edge Thinning: Adjust the edge thinning to smooth out the edges of your subject and remove any remaining green halos.

5. Refine the Key

- Use the "Refine Matte" tools to make further adjustments to the key.

- The "Matte Choker" tool can be used to narrow the outline of the effect mask, making it more precise.

- The "Spill Suppressor" tool can be used to reduce any remaining green spill on your subject.

6. Export Your Footage

- Once you are satisfied with the key, you can export your footage.

- Click the "File" button in the Toolbar and select "Export" > "Add to Render Queue."

- In the "Render Queue" panel, select the output format, frame rate, and other settings, and then click the "Render" button to export your footage.
