Master Masks in Darktable: Precise Local Adjustments with Free Photo Editing Software

While most photographers use either Photoshop or Lightroom, there are plenty of Adobe alternatives out there, one of which is the open-soured platform Darktable.

This free photo editing software and raw editor is more sophisticated than your typical free software, though.

Darktable, for instance, allows its users to add modules for different types of image processing, from simple crops and spot removal to more complex effects like turning day into night.

What’s more, all editing is non-destructive and operates on cached image buffers for display. The full image is only converted during export.

In this video, one of Darktable’s developers demonstrates how photographers can use Darktable to employ advanced masking techniques to make local adjustments to their images that rival Adobe Lightroom.
