Adobe (again), released a teaser video showcasing an important update to its object selection tool using artificial intelligence in Photoshop.
A year ago Adobe released their original Object Selection Tool and we even did some tests with that tool in order to see how good it really is – see here (hint – it works but on a pretty basic level).
The new version which should come in the next version of Adobe Photoshop uses a more advanced version of Adobe’s Sensei AI technology and brings this selection technology front and center to the main toolbar of Photoshop, meaning Adobe is more confident in its abilities now.
From the video above it does look marginally better, although if you look carefully you can see that it still has issues with hair and areas where there are complex objects (like an arm with some space between it and the body) it doesn’t recognize correctly.
It is clear that this technology will take a few more iterations to work perfectly (or at least close to that to really replace manual masking) in most situations, however in our view anything that can save us time is welcome and we will be checking the new tool when it arrives soon.
As always Adobe doesn’t like to talk about specific dates for upcoming releases but based on previous “sneak peaks” we are talking about a few weeks at most (possibly even this October).
