Fix Overexposed Photos in Adobe Lightroom: Step-by-Step Guide

On this video tutorial Aaron Nace from Phlearn looks at two settings of the brush tool  – flow and opacity in Adobe Lightroom.

Although we are used to listening to Nace’s tutorials on Photoshop, this time around we take a look at Lightroom and one of the most basic thing that every photographer needs to know how to perform – correcting an over exposed image.

Nace starts with a RAW file (you have far less play with JPEGs when it comes to under/over exposure) and plays with the exposure slider to see if we can save some details from the over exposed parts. In this case we can so we create a virtual copy of the image and with this virtual copy we bring the areas which are overexposed to a level where you can see all the details.

Now we have two files – the regular image and the darker image. In Lightroom CC we have a simple way to combine them using HDR. We will do this using photo-merge in Lightroom. That’s it – really simple and you can do something very similar with Photoshop as well (just save your image twice) and merge it to HDR- just like here.
