I. Preparation and Initial Adjustments
1. Import Your Image: Launch Luminar AI/Neo and import the portrait you want to retouch.
2. Choose the Right Editing Panel:
* Luminar AI: The primary focus is on using Templates. These intelligently adjust the photo based on Luminar's understanding of the image.
* Luminar Neo: Provides more granular control with traditional editing tools organized into panels (Edit, Layers, Masking, etc.). The Portrait tab within the Edit panel is where you'll find many retouching tools.
3. Basic Corrections (Essential for any Portrait):
* Develop Module/Basic Adjustments:
* Exposure: Correct any underexposure or overexposure.
* Contrast: Add or reduce contrast to enhance details and depth. Be careful not to overdo it, as harsh contrast can emphasize skin imperfections.
* Highlights/Shadows: Recover details in bright highlights or dark shadows. This is crucial for balancing the light on the face.
* White Balance: Adjust the color temperature to achieve a natural skin tone. Use the eye dropper tool to click on a neutral gray area of the image for a starting point.
* Color/Saturation: Subtle adjustments to the overall color are. Adjust saturation to enhance the vibrant colors but avoid over-saturation that can look unnatural.
II. Using Luminar AI - Template-Based Retouching
Luminar AI's strength is its AI-powered Templates. They analyze the image and automatically apply a series of adjustments.
1. Browse Templates: Go to the "Templates" panel. Luminar AI will suggest templates based on the image content.
2. Portrait Categories: Look for template categories specifically designed for portraits, such as "Portrait," "High Key Portrait," "Low Key Portrait," "Fashion," or similar.
3. Apply a Template: Click on a template to apply it to your image.
4. Adjust the Template Intensity: Use the "Amount" slider to control the overall strength of the template. Start with a low amount and gradually increase it until you achieve the desired look.
5. Fine-Tune the Template (Optional): Even with templates, you can further refine the adjustments. You can do this by going to the "Edit" panel and adjusting individual tools. Luminar AI's AI tools are explained below, in the Luminar Neo section. Many of them are also in Luminar AI.
III. Using Luminar Neo - Detailed Portrait Retouching
Luminar Neo offers more granular control with individual tools.
1. Face AI: (Located in the Portrait panel within the Edit tab) This is the core of Luminar Neo's portrait retouching.
* Face Light: Brightens the face without affecting the rest of the image. Use it to correct uneven lighting.
* Skin AI: Automatically detects and improves skin texture.
* Skin Defect Removal: Automatically removes blemishes, freckles, and other imperfections. Adjust the "Amount" slider to control the intensity.
* Skin Smoothing: Smooths the skin texture for a more refined look. Use it sparingly to avoid making the skin look plastic or unnatural. Adjust "Amount" and "Details" (preserves skin texture while smoothing).
* Shine Removal: Reduces shine and hotspots on the skin.
* Eye AI:
* Eye Whitening: Brightens the whites of the eyes for a more vibrant look. Avoid overdoing it, as it can look artificial.
* Eye Enhance: Sharpens and enhances the details in the eyes.
* Dark Circle Removal: Reduces dark circles under the eyes.
* Iris Flare: Adds subtle light reflections to the irises.
* Iris Enhance: Makes the iris more vivid and colorful.
* Lip AI:
* Saturation: Adjust the lip saturation.
* Redness: Controls the amount of red.
* Darkening: Deepens the lip color.
* Shine: Adds shine to the lips.
* Shape: Subtly reshape the lips.
2. Body AI (Neo Only): (Located in the Portrait panel within the Edit tab)
* Slim Face: Subtly slim the face. Use sparingly to avoid looking unnatural.
* Slim Body: Slim the body. Use sparingly to avoid looking unnatural.
3. High Key: (Located in the Edit panel, potentially in the "Creative" section). Creates a bright, airy portrait effect with soft highlights.
4. Glow: (Located in the Edit panel, potentially in the "Creative" section). Adds a soft, dreamy glow to the image. Useful for creating a more ethereal or romantic feel.
5. Details/Structure: (Located in the Edit panel).
* Increase Clarity/Structure (Subtly): Enhance details and texture, but be cautious. Too much can make the skin look harsh.
6. Dodge & Burn: (May be a dedicated tool, or use Layers with Curves/Brightness/Contrast adjustments and masks). Used to subtly sculpt the face by lightening highlights and darkening shadows. Very powerful for shaping features.
IV. Advanced Techniques
* Layers and Masks:
* Use layers to apply adjustments non-destructively. This allows you to isolate adjustments to specific areas of the image.
* Use masks (gradient masks, radial masks, brush masks, AI-powered masks) to control where adjustments are applied. For example, you might use a radial mask to brighten the eyes or lips. AI masks can automatically select the person in the image.
* Clone and Stamp Tool (Neo Only): Use the Clone & Stamp tool to remove larger blemishes or distractions.
* Frequency Separation (Advanced, Requires Photoshop and Luminar Neo Plug-in): A technique to edit skin texture and color separately, achieving a very natural-looking result. This is a more advanced technique.
V. Tips for Natural-Looking Retouching
* Less is More: The key to successful portrait retouching is subtlety. Avoid over-smoothing the skin or making features look unnatural.
* Preserve Texture: Don't completely remove all skin texture. A little bit of texture is essential for a realistic look.
* Focus on the Eyes: The eyes are the most important part of a portrait. Make sure they are sharp, bright, and engaging.
* Maintain Proportions: When using tools like Slim Face or Lip Shape, be very careful not to distort the subject's natural proportions.
* Work Non-Destructively: Use layers and masks so that you can always go back and make changes without ruining your original image.
* Zoom In and Out: Zoom in to work on fine details, and then zoom out to see the overall effect of your adjustments.
* Consider the Subject's Age and Personality: A portrait of a young child will require different retouching techniques than a portrait of an older adult.
Workflow Summary:
1. Import and Initial Corrections: Adjust Exposure, Contrast, Highlights/Shadows, White Balance.
2. Face AI (Neo)/Templates (AI): Use AI-powered tools to enhance skin, eyes, and lips. Adjust intensity carefully.
3. Fine-Tuning: Use layers, masks, and individual tools (Dodge & Burn, Glow, Details) for more control.
4. Final Polish: Check the overall image and make any final adjustments.
Remember to practice and experiment with different techniques to find what works best for you and your subjects. Happy retouching!
