1. Preparation & Workflow
* Import your Image: Open Luminar and import the portrait you want to retouch.
* Choose your Luminar version: The features are similar, but might be found in slightly different locations within the interface.
* Understand Your Goal: Before you start, decide what you want to achieve. Do you want a natural, subtle enhancement or a more polished, glamorous look? This will guide your retouching decisions.
* Non-Destructive Editing: Luminar offers a non-destructive workflow. This means the original image is never directly altered. All changes are stored as instructions, allowing you to revert or adjust them later.
2. Key Luminar Tools for Portrait Retouching
Luminar offers both AI-powered and manual tools for portrait retouching. Here's an overview of the most important ones, grouped by function:
* AI-Powered Tools (Simplicity & Speed):
* Portrait AI (in Neo, also present as Portrait Enhancer in older versions): This is Luminar's flagship portrait tool. It automatically detects faces in your image and offers several adjustments:
* Face AI:
* *Skin AI:* Smooths skin, removes blemishes, and enhances texture. Be careful not to overdo this and lose detail! Control the Defect Removal and Skin Smoothing sliders.
* *Face Light:* Brightens the face and adds subtle fill light.
* *Slim Face 2.0 (Neo Only):* Subtly reshapes the face for a more flattering look. Use with caution and only make very small adjustments.
* Eyes AI:
* *Dark Circles Removal:* Reduces the appearance of dark circles under the eyes.
* *Eye Whitening:* Brightens the whites of the eyes.
* *Eye Enhancer:* Enhances the sharpness and detail of the eyes.
* *Iris Flare (Neo Only):* Adds a subtle glint to the iris.
* Lips AI:
* *Saturation:* Adjusts the color saturation of the lips.
* *Redness:* Adjusts the redness of the lips.
* *Darkening:* Darkens the lips, adding definition.
* *Lip Shine (Neo Only):* Adds a subtle shine to the lips.
* Brows AI (Neo Only): Allows adjustments to eyebrow shape, thickness, and definition. Helps to balance facial features.
* Overall:
* *Portrait Bokeh AI (Neo Only):* Creates a shallow depth of field effect, blurring the background and emphasizing the subject. Choose a different background replacement image here if desired. This can also be found as AI Background Removal.
* Skin AI (In Neo, part of the Face AI Tab): Dedicated tool for skin retouching with:
* Defect Removal: Automatically removes blemishes and imperfections.
* Skin Smoothing: Smooths the skin's texture.
* Shine Removal: Reduces highlights on oily skin.
* Essential Manual Adjustments (Precision & Control):
* Develop Module/Panel: (Basic Image Adjustments)
* *Exposure:* Adjusts the overall brightness of the image.
* *Contrast:* Adjusts the difference between highlights and shadows.
* *Highlights/Shadows:* Recovers detail in bright and dark areas.
* *Whites/Blacks:* Sets the white and black points in the image.
* *Clarity:* Adds or reduces local contrast. Use sparingly on skin!
* *Dehaze:* Reduces or adds atmospheric haze.
* Color Module/Panel:
* *Temperature/Tint:* Adjusts the color balance.
* *Hue/Saturation/Luminance (HSL):* Adjusts the color of specific areas of the image. This is extremely useful for fine-tuning skin tones. Target the orange and yellow ranges carefully.
* Details Module/Panel:
* *Sharpening:* Adds sharpness to the image. Use it selectively, focusing on the eyes and other key areas.
* *Noise Reduction:* Reduces noise in the image. Use it carefully, as it can soften details.
3. Retouching Workflow - Step-by-Step Guide
1. Initial Corrections in the Develop Module: Start by adjusting the overall exposure, contrast, highlights, and shadows. Correct any color casts. This sets a good foundation for more specific retouching.
2. Use Portrait AI/Enhancer: Apply the Portrait AI (or Portrait Enhancer in older versions) to automatically enhance the face. Be subtle!
* Skin Smoothing & Defect Removal: Adjust the Skin AI (or within Face AI) sliders carefully. Aim for natural-looking skin, not plastic. Don't remove every single freckle or wrinkle, as this can look unnatural.
* Eye Enhancement: Use the Eye AI to brighten and sharpen the eyes. The eyes are a key focal point in a portrait.
* Lip Adjustments: Enhance the lips with subtle saturation and darkening.
* Slim Face (Neo Only): If desired, make *very slight* adjustments with Slim Face 2.0.
3. Fine-Tune Skin Tones with HSL: Use the HSL panel to adjust the hue, saturation, and luminance of the skin tones. Focus on the orange and yellow ranges. Correct any overly red or yellow skin.
4. Dodge and Burn (Optional - Luminar Neo has built-in tools for this): Dodge and burn is a technique used to selectively lighten (dodge) and darken (burn) areas of the image to enhance contours and add depth. Luminar Neo has this as a built in tool to the 'Develop' Panel.
* For older versions You can manually dodge and burn using a combination of layers, masking, and adjustments. Create a new adjustment layer, set the blend mode to "Soft Light" or "Overlay", and use the brush tool with a low opacity to paint in the areas you want to lighten or darken.
5. Sharpening: Add a subtle amount of sharpening to the eyes and other key areas of the face.
6. Noise Reduction: If necessary, reduce noise in the image.
7. Crop & Composition: Review the overall composition and crop the image if needed.
8. Final Adjustments: Make any final adjustments to the overall image, such as contrast or color balance.
9. Export: Export the image in your desired format.
Tips for Natural-Looking Retouching:
* Less is More: The best retouching is often invisible. Avoid overdoing the adjustments.
* Preserve Texture: Don't completely remove skin texture. A little texture is essential for a natural look.
* Focus on the Eyes: The eyes are the most important part of a portrait. Make sure they are sharp, bright, and engaging.
* Maintain Proportions: Avoid drastic changes to the face shape. Subtle adjustments are key.
* Consider the Lighting: The lighting in the original image will affect how you retouch it. Adjust your retouching to complement the existing light.
* Work in Small Increments: Make small adjustments and check the results frequently.
* Step Back and Review: Take breaks during the retouching process and review your work with fresh eyes.
* Use Layers and Masks (especially if using manual dodging/burning in older versions): These allow you to make precise adjustments and control where the effects are applied.
* Practice: The more you practice, the better you'll become at portrait retouching.
Common Mistakes to Avoid:
* Over-Smoothing Skin: Creating a plastic or porcelain look.
* Removing Too Many Blemishes: Making the subject look unnatural.
* Over-Sharpening: Creating harsh or pixelated edges.
* Incorrect Color Correction: Resulting in unnatural skin tones.
* Unnatural Eye Whitening: Making the eyes look too bright and unnatural.
By following these steps and practicing regularly, you can use Luminar to create beautiful and natural-looking portrait retouches. Remember to prioritize subtlety and aim for a look that enhances the subject's natural beauty.
