Master Adding Text in iMovie: How to Insert Multiple Titles on Mac and iOS

iMovie is one of the most popular video editors, and its built‑in title effects make it effortless to add titles, subtitles, captions, and credits to any project.

What You’ll Learn

  • Step‑by‑step instructions for adding text on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
  • How to work around iMovie’s two‑track limitation to display multiple titles in a single clip.
  • An alternative solution—FlexClip—that lets you layer several titles on the same frame.

Part 1 – Adding Text to iMovie on iPhone, iPad, and Mac

1.1 iPhone / iPad

  1. Open iMovie and tap the + icon. Choose Movie and then Create Movie to import your footage.
  2. Tap a clip in the timeline where you want a title, then tap the T button in the inspector at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Browse the available text styles and tap one to add it to the clip.
  4. Double‑tap the text box to edit the content. Use the toolbar to adjust placement, font, size, alignment, and color.

Note: iMovie on iOS only supports one text layer per clip. If you need multiple lines, split the clip (see Part 2).

1.2 Mac

  1. Open your project and select Titles from the top toolbar.
  2. Choose from a broader selection—Standard Titles, Lower Thirds, Scrolling Credits, etc.—and drag your choice onto the timeline.
  3. Double‑click the title in the viewer to edit the text, then use the formatting toolbar to fine‑tune font, size, alignment, and color.

Part 2 – Adding Multiple Text Boxes in a Single Clip

iMovie’s timeline has only two video tracks, so each title occupies a track. Because of this, you can’t layer several titles over the same frame in a single clip. The workaround is to split the clip into segments and add a title to each segment.

  1. Drag the playhead to the point where you want to split the clip.
  2. Tap Split Clip from the clip menu.
  3. Add a title to the first segment, then repeat for subsequent segments.

While this method keeps titles separate, it prevents overlapping titles within the same frame.

Part 3 – A Better Alternative: FlexClip for Layered Titles

If you need several titles on the same frame, FlexClip offers an intuitive web‑based editor with unlimited text layers, animations, and styling options.

  1. Upload your video to the FlexClip editor and drag it onto the timeline.
  2. Click the Text tab in the left toolbar, add multiple text boxes, and type your content.
  3. Drag each text layer in the timeline to set its start time, duration, and overlap.

Beyond text, FlexClip allows you to add transitions, filters, watermarks, voice‑overs, and even AI‑generated subtitles or narration.

Final Thoughts

Adding titles in iMovie is straightforward, but the platform’s track limits can constrain creative layering. FlexClip’s online editor bypasses these limits, giving you full control over multiple overlapping titles and advanced editing tools.
