It's set in a ghost town, the Tianducheng development in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. It has an Eiffel Tower replica and empty buildings which sets a perfect scene for this incredibly choreographed music video. Directed by Romain Gavras, the video has hundreds of kids with peroxided, yellow-white hair and matching outfits running through the deserted city to the foot of the replica Eiffel tower, and a very unique dancing style captured with great aerial video.
The behind the scenes video is one of the best I've seen. It gives insight into the people's lives there, and also showcases some incredible black and white photographs showing great portraits and moments of the production days there. The kids all come from the Xiaolong Martial Arts Schools Disciples and you see the training as they space out each other just before marching.
The drone used looks like the Aerigon MK II, and does incredible, stressful work flying up the centre of the replica Eiffel tower, which is a lot smaller than the original one in Paris. The booms and planning to get this video together is on a level of blockbuster movie production, and how the director got the children to work so seamlessly really makes me wish I could be a fly against the wall with the initial meetings.
In the behind the scenes video the communication between the director and the drone's Director of Photography shows how the director envisions each scene. You hear him say "Ok, not too fast now, ok, that's a good relationship to them," indicating the speed he wants the drone to fly over the running of the children. Because of the size of the group involved and the communication barriers with regards to language I don't believe they had many takes with each shot.
It's more of a short film than a music video and BTS video gives insight into how it was achieved. Get inspired.
