Software Timelapses: Therapeutic and Effective Learning Strategy

From the sixty-second quick tip to the ten-minute deep dive, here are five videos to dip your toes into learning via timelapse software.

YouTube is rich with tutorials that range from the sixty-second quick tip to an hour-long deep dive. These videos can be filled with informational call-outs or presented by energetic hosts that make you feel like you’re learning in person.

However, sometimes it can be too much. Sometimes, you don’t want to know about every keyboard shortcut, or perhaps you don’t have the time to spend forty minutes learning about a new Resolve feature. Or, you just want to watch the professional do their thing with no commentary. If this sounds like something you’d rather watch, you might want to jump down the niche rabbit hole of software timelapse videos.

These videos are usually three to ten minutes in length and condense hours of work into a single short video. Additionally, when someone is just working and not trying to present information, I find you may also pick up small tips and tricks that’d have otherwise gone unmentioned. Also, I guess you could say they are quite therapeutic to watch.

Let’s take a look at five videos I recommend if you’re interested in exploring this niche way of learning.

1. Imad Awan: Concept Art

Imad Awan is an artist and illustrator who works on video game concept art and has a YouTube channel dedicated to capturing his process. In this aptly-timed piece, you can follow his strategy of taking photos and images and converting them into a concept piece displaying a quarantined city.

2. PremiumBeat: Color Grading

In this three-minute video, I run through the core process of correcting and grading a RAW cinema file into a delivery-ready clip. As Resolve has a confined UI, and it’s easy to lose track of what’s going on, I label each node so it’s easy to follow along. If you’d like to see more of this content on our channel, leave us a comment on the video.

3. Simple Video Making: Animation

In this timelapse from Simple Video Making, they run through the entire process of bringing animation to life. And, when I say the whole process, I mean just that. Starting from the blank page in Photoshop to the animation process in Moho Studio to fine-tuning in After Effects.

4. UglyMcGregor: Creating a Movie Poster

Okay, yes, that’s my surname, and yes, this is my channel. In this timelapse, I delve into creating a poster for a web series. As the image was captured from a RED cinema camera, we start from the initial process of photographing the poster with the actor in the makeup chair. As the still was pulled from a video clip, the process itself is a journey as I jump across a variety of software to bring this poster to life — from REDCINEX to Lightroom, Photoshop, and After Effects.

5. DLGNCE: 3D Modeling

Okay, I won’t pretend to know what’s going on in this video. The world of 3D is still something I’ve yet to delve into, though tell myself each year I will. Maybe with several timelapse videos under my belt, I might better understand the workflow.

In this video from DLGNCE, he runs through the process of creating a Typographic Landscape in Cinema4D. The video is three hours condensed into twenty minutes, and even after watching the timelapse, the process is still confusing to me. Maybe I’ll delve into 3D modeling next year…
