How to Calculate (and Control) Lighting Ratios

While you can use light meters for precise readings, you can also approximate the ratio with experience and observation. Here's the basic process:

1. Set Your Key Light: Position and adjust your main light source. This is the light that primarily illuminates your subject.

2. Meter the Key Light: Take a light meter reading (or use your camera's meter) of the illuminated side of your subject's face. If you're using your camera's meter, make sure you're metering the light that's falling on your subject's skin, not the overall scene.

3. Add Your Fill Light (or Adjust Ambient Light): Introduce your fill light (reflector, second light, etc.) to soften the shadows. Alternatively, you can control the existing ambient light by dimming room lights or blocking windows.

4. Meter the Shadow Side: Take a light meter reading (or use your camera's meter) of the *shadow side* of your subject's face. Be careful not to let the meter be influenced by the key light.

5. Calculate the Ratio: Divide the key light reading by the fill light reading. For example, if the key light reading is f/8 and the fill light reading is f/4, the ratio is 4:1 (because f/8 is two stops brighter than f/4, and each stop doubles the light). Each f/stop doubles the amount of light. One stop equals a 2:1 ratio.

* Light Meter: The most accurate way to measure light. A handheld meter is ideal for studio work, but you can use your camera's built-in meter as an approximation.
