Matt Pinner's Favorite Landscape Photo: Capturing February 2018's Beast from the East Snowstorm

If there’s one thing that we’ll remember February 2018 for in the UK, it’s the weather. The ‘Beast from the East’ and Storm Emma combined to make it unusually cold while a dump of snow triggered landscape photographers across the land to scurry out with their cameras.

As a dedicated landscape photographer, Matt Pinner understands the opportunities that snow can offer and he opted to travel to the coast to capture something a little more unusual than most. It was a gruelling drive, but he captured his favourite image of February while he was there, so we think it was worth it.

What do you think?

Matt Pinner s Favorite Landscape Photo: Capturing February 2018 s Beast from the East Snowstorm

Why have you chosen this image?

It’s rare to get proper snow down south, especially at the cliff’s edge. So rare, that one man I met there said he has lived in the area for 35years and had never seen it covered with snow. I think it’s a very special image

Where, when and why did you shoot it?

This was shot at Beachy Head lighthouse at sunset, which is a popular spot for landscape photographers. It’s a fair drive from my house in good weather, but when I saw the weather forecast I knew I had to make the trip to capture something a little different from the norm.

Were there any particular challenges?

It was -6C and the wind speed made it difficult to focus on the subject. Oh and the 5 hour round trip drive!

Location/Subject: Beachy Head, Sussex
Time the shot was taken: 5:30pm
Camera: Canon 5D Mark III
Lens: 17-35mm
Exposure: 1.8 sec f/11 ISO 400
