Colour management is one of those mysterious aspects of photography, like flash, that can confound people before they even try it. Many people think they can fine tune their monitor settings by eye, or simply proclaim that the whole concept is just fake news, so why bother!
But the truth is that accurate colour management is essential and there is no way around it. Do it the right way, or live with the fact that you’ll never produce images with consistent and correct tone, colour and contrast.
One person who really does know about colour Management is expert Ashley Karyl. He’s the author of the definitive book on the subject, Colour Management Pro.
In his first video for Camera Jabber he shows how to use the X-Rite ColorChecker to create a custom colour profile that can be used in either Photoshop or Lighroom.
This profile can be created with any camera, but you will need the X-Rite ColorChecker Passport to do so. In the video, he demonstrates the type of picture you need to take to create the profile and then the process of converting the camera’s raw file into a generic DNG before importing it into X-Rite’s own software.
