GoPro Unveils Innovative Spherical Camera Mount for Immersive VR Experiences

While 3D photography never fully captured the public imagination, virtual reality (VR) is reshaping how we consume visual media. GoPro is positioning itself at the forefront of this shift with its newly revealed multi‑camera system.

Unveiled at the Re/Code Conference by CEO Nick Woodman, the spherical mount securely holds six GoPro HERO units, creating a complete sphere of visual data. The footage can be stitched into a seamless 360° video, ready for immersive playback on head‑mounted displays such as the upcoming Oculus Rift. Viewers can look around in any direction, experiencing a genuine sense of presence within the scene.

While smaller firms have offered custom mounts to achieve similar results, GoPro’s proven hardware quality and brand recognition give it a competitive edge over other action‑camera designs. The company’s acquisition of French VR company Kolor had sparked speculation about this initiative; the new mount confirms GoPro’s commitment to immersive content.

At the same event, Woodman announced GoPro’s entry into the drone market, with a proprietary quadcopter slated for release in 2016. Though DJI dominates the sector, GoPro’s history of market disruption suggests it could carve out a significant niche.

Pricing details for the spherical mount and upcoming drone remain undisclosed. GoPro is expected to position its products at a premium tier, emphasizing advanced features and integration with existing GoPro ecosystems.
