This full‑frame, high‑speed, short‑telephoto lens is Tamron’s tenth 90 mm macro released since 1979, but it’s the first of the company’s five true macros to incorporate Vibration Compensation. At a retail price of $750, the 90 mm f/2.8 zooms to 135 mm or 144 mm on APS‑C bodies, depending on mount (we tested a Canon‑compatible sample).

Among image‑stabilized macros, it stands out as the lightest, most compact, and most affordable option—often by a wide margin. It also introduces Tamron’s ultra‑thin eBAND coating to suppress reflections and flare. Additional advantages include one low‑dispersion and two extra‑low‑dispersion elements that minimize chromatic aberration, moisture‑resistant seals, and an internal focusing system that keeps the barrel fixed for macro ring‑light use.

On a camera the lens feels well‑balanced—neither too heavy nor too light. The unusually large manual‑focus ring turns smoothly over a long travel. The reverse‑mounting hood snaps on and off easily, while the center‑pinch cap detaches too readily. A focus limiter provides full, macro‑only, and 1:3‑to‑infinity ranges, and a three‑tier subject‑distance scale clearly lists magnification ratios.

In the field we were impressed by the vivid colors in the viewfinder, crisp contrast that allowed rapid manual focusing, and an autofocus system that, while not the fastest, is arguably the quietest and smoothest we’ve encountered.

Lab testing confirmed the lens’s excellence. SQF scores for contrast and sharpness sat in the low‑ to mid‑Excellent range—just shy of Nikon and Sigma comparables and matching Canon’s performance. Distortion registered at a mere 0.02 % pincushion both near and mid‑range, essentially distortion‑free. No corner vignetting appeared across the macro range, and the VC system delivered an average of 3.6 extra stops of handheld sharpness—best in class, often by a hair.

For anyone needing true 1:1 macro capability, this lens is hard to beat. It excels at close‑up work and portraits, delivering exceptional distortion control, image stabilization, and a lightweight, compact package that feels just as comfortable to handle as it is budget‑friendly.
