The Zeiss Milvus 85mm f/1.4 is the third 85mm lens in Zeiss’s current lineup and the first of six new full‑frame, manual‑focus Milvus lenses to be tested by Popular Photography. Positioned between the premium Otus series and the budget‑friendly Classic line, the Milvus offers high‑resolution performance at a more approachable price of $1,799.
Its internal optical design is entirely new, yet the lens retains the classic Zeiss aesthetic: a sleek, all‑metal matte‑black body, a reverse‑mountable hood with black flocking, and a smooth, long manual focus collar. Barrel markings include subject distance and depth‑of‑field scales, but the lens omits the brand and focal‑length label for a cleaner look.
In our comparative testing, the Milvus ranked second among six 85mm lenses—outperforming Nikon, Sigma, Sony, and Rokinon, and trailing only the Otus in sharpness. All three Zeiss models achieved an imperceptible 0.02% distortion, while the Milvus and Otus delivered negligible vignetting at f/2.5; the Classic required f/2 to reach the same level.
Close‑focusing results are striking: the Milvus and Otus both reach 31 inches, significantly tighter than the Rokinon’s 45.2 inches and the Classic’s 39.8 inches. Nikon leads in maximum magnification at 1:5.87, slightly better than the Milvus’s 1:7.34.
