A collaboration between Leica and Apple design icon Jony Ive has yielded a limited‑edition Leica M camera destined for a (RED) auction that will benefit global health initiatives.
According to the press release, the design journey involved 561 prototypes before settling on the final form, and 725 hours of manufacturing time. The body is crafted from anodized aluminum, echoing the minimalist aesthetic of Apple hardware. One notable change is the removal of the traditional hot shoe, a design choice that prioritizes sleekness over accessory compatibility.
The camera will be auctioned at the (RED) event on November 23rd, with proceeds supporting the fight against AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. While the final hammer price remains uncertain, the combination of Leica's precision optics and Ive's design pedigree suggests a potential sale in the tens of thousands of dollars.
