In this video tutorial, Justin Odisho demonstrates how to create a simple live text animation and add a visually pleasing reflection in Premiere Pro.
Let’s start with the fun part. Place your video on the timeline and place a text box over it type your text (extend the text to the length that you want) and stylize it to your liking.
To create the live text effect where the video appears inside the text, go to effects>video effects>keying>track matte key and place this effect on the video layer (again, do not place this on the text layer but on the video layer you are trying to show inside the text).
Choose the clip and go to the effects control and you will be able to see the track matte key effect. The only thing that you need to do now is to choose the matte layer you want the video to appear on – choose the layer number where you placed the text and your text will be filled with the video.
One thing Odisho does not show in the video and is important is that you can move the video around to get the most interesting parts shown inside your text using the position (and scale) effect controls.
Adding Text Reflection
The next stage is creating the reflection. Add a new adjustment layer. Add it above the text layer we created (and extend it to the proper length). Now go to effects>video effects>distort>mirror and drag this effect onto the newly created adjustment layer.
Select the adjustment layer and go to the effects control and choose the mirror effect and change the reflection angle to 90 degrees. You can now move the reflection a little bit down (you can choose how much spacing you want between your text and your reflection.
While you can leave the reflection as is, a nicer way to present the reflection is to either add opacity (but this will reduce the opacity of the entire reflection and might not be what you want or better yet do what Odisho is demonstrating in the video by adding a mask.
By creating a mask and adding a mask feather (lots of it) you can easily create a gradient effect on your reflection which looks pretty cool.
