On this day in 1872 President Ulysses S. Grant established Yellowstone National Park, marking the beginning of America’s greatest legacy. There are now 59 National Parks located across 27 states, spanning five ecosystems and over 51 million acres. But, the truly remarkable thing about the Parks is not their lava-spitting volcanoes, or sky-scraping sequoias, or glowing waterfalls, or even something called the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes — it’s the fact that they were established and are protected as public lands where their magnificence can be shared.
