RØDE Unveils VideoMic Pro+ On-Camera Shotgun Microphone: Superior Audio Upgrade

All images via Rode.

If you have a DSLR or mirrorless camera, odds are you own a Rode VideoMic. Even if you’ve upgraded your cameras over the years, I bet many of you still have Rode microphones. Not only are they fantastic, they are also incredibly affordable and easy to use.

The new Rode VideoMic Pro+ is the newest in the series, and new features like an automatic power function with plug-in power capabilities makes this the best VideoMic yet.

This shotgun microphone, like previous models, is compatible with camcorders, mirrorless and DSLR cameras, and portable audio recorders.

The power is also an improvement. You can now power with AA batteries, USB cable, or built-in rechargeable battery. The rechargeable battery supposedly lasts over 100 hours of recording on a 2-hour charge time. Further, the AA batteries are easy-to-replace with a new battery door. I personally find the ability to use AA batteries over 9V a nice bonus.

What’s most exciting is the plug-in power with Automatic Power Function, which will automatically turn the microphone on and off when the camera powers on or off. This is great because I know I’ve personally either forgotten to turn on (or off) my VideoMic in the past. More than once.

The VideoMic Pro+ also features Digital Switching, giving shooters the best audio signal. The system uses a 2-Stage High Pass Filter to reduce low frequencies, 3-Stage Gain Control (with +20dB function) for DSLR or mirrorless cameras, High Frequency Boost for high frequency detail and clarity, and a Safety Channel to prevent clipping.

The VideoMic Pro+ suspension still relies on the great Rycote Lyre system, perfect for handling camera movement and maintaining clear, quality audio.
