Creating Dramatic Product Photography with Fire: A Tutorial

In today's video, I light the bottle of Oliveum Hot Sauce on fire for an online advertising campaign I'm about to run.

My goal was to capture Oliveum hot sauce with embers falling down around it in slow motion. I ended up filming this in my backyard at night to get a black background. I set the bottle on a piece of glass on top of a black piece of foam core to get a reflection. I then lit lighter fluid-soaked steel wool on fire and let the embers fall down onto the bottle. For additional shots, I lit steel wool on fire around the bottle itself to get flames in the shot.

Back in Premiere, it was easy to stack shots on top of each other and by choosing the "lighten" blending layer, I could combine fire elements together.

This look took quite a bit of trial and error, and it's a bit too difficult to explain in writing, so watch the video above to get the full explanation.
