Over the past few years, Sony has cemented its position at the forefront of sensor development. Now we get an exclusive preview of the next major leap in Sony’s sensor technology – the curved sensor.
Profiled in IEEE Spectrum, the curved sensor offers several key advantages over traditional flat sensors. Optically, the curvature allows light from the lens to strike the sensor directly, rather than at an angle. This enables lenses to be flatter, capture more light, and reduce edge‑aberration, resulting in a more consistent image across the frame.
Electrically, the design promises higher performance. IEEE Spectrum notes that Sony is developing two curved sensors. One has an 11‑mm diagonal, suitable for mobile‑phone cameras, while the other measures 43‑mm, matching a full‑frame format. (An 11‑mm diagonal corresponds to a 1/1.7‑inch sensor, which is typically found in advanced still‑camera bodies.)
Although a curved full‑frame camera is not yet on the horizon, the technology signals a significant shift in how future cameras will be built. We’ll keep you updated on Sony’s progress.
