While a recent article highlighted a smartphone capable of recording 4K video, Sony’s new FDR‑AX1 offers a more practical solution. Priced at $4,495, this camcorder delivers true 4K performance.

The AX1 captures 16:9 footage at a full 3840 × 2160 resolution. Powered by a single 1/2.3‑inch sensor, it generates roughly 1 GB of data per minute of 4K recording—an impressive feat for a single‑sensor system. It records directly to XQD cards, a format Sony favors for its speed and reliability. Dual XQD slots are included, and the kit comes with a 16 GB card.

Its 20× zoom lens and built‑in stereo microphone provide the versatility expected from a high‑end prosumer camcorder. The design closely mirrors Sony’s established lineup, offering familiarity and proven performance.

The HDR‑MV1 Music Video Recorder is a pocket‑sized camera priced at $300. Equipped with a front‑mounted stereo microphone array that captures sound across a 120‑degree field, its lens delivers an equally wide 120‑degree field of view.

Designed for music video production, the recorder captures uncompressed linear PCM audio—slightly superior to CD quality—and records video at 1080p, 30 fps. While 60 fps would be ideal, the device’s overall performance is commendable given its affordable price.
