Canon Unveils EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III USM and EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM L-Series Zoom Lenses

Canon Unveils EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III USM and EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM L-Series Zoom Lenses

The big news out of the Canon camp today is, of course, the new EOS 5D Mark IV DSLR, but the company also has a pair of updates for its popular zoom lenses: The EF 16–35mm f/2.8L III USM and EF 24–105mm f/4L IS II USM.

The 16–35mm f/2.8L III USM is, as the name suggests, the third iteration of the popular wide-angle zoom lens, which is a staple for many photojournalists and event shooters. The new optical design includes a dual-surface aspherical lens element, as well as a ground aspherical lens. There’s now a fluorine coating on the outer elements to improve its resistance to moisture and grime that tends to accumulate on the front element.

Canon claims there will be considerable image quality improvements with the new version of the lens, particularly in the corners where things can get a bit soft on wide-angle zooms.

The EF 16–35mm f/2.8L III USM will be available in October for $2,199.

The other new lens in the stable is the EF 24–105mm f/4L IS II USM zoom, which is actually an update to the popular full-frame Canon kit lens. The new version includes an air sphere coating to reduce flare and ghosting, as well as a revamped Image Stabilization system that promises four-stops of improvement.

The EF 24–105mm f/4L IS II USM will be available in October for a more-affordable $1,099.
