This morning during an event in New York City, Sony announced a new flagship camera for the APS-C line. The Sony a6600 is a 24.2 megapixel camera with the latest generation BIONZ X processor, the “world’s fastest” 0.02 auto focus speed and the standard 5-axis in-body image stabilization. In short, this new APS-C camera has many of the same technical features as Sony’s a7IV. Here is what else we know about it:
- 425 phase-detection auto-focus points, covering 84 percent of the frame
- 11 frames per second continuous shooting with AF/AE tracking
- Real-time Eye AF for humans and animals in stills and video
- Real-time tracking
- 4K HDR movies with Advanced AF speed and stability
- 180-degree tiltable touch screen
- Increased battery life
- Ergonomic enhancements
- Mic input and headphone output
- Available in November 2019 for $1400 (body only) or $1800 with the E18-135
In addition to the a6600 Sony announced the a6100. This camera also features that fast 0.02 auto focus, 11fps continuous shooting, and 425 phase-detection AF points covering 84 percent of the frame. Like the a6600 it has Real-time Eye AF, Real-time tracking, 4K video, and an 180-degree tiltable touch screen. It’s aimed at a more entry-level shooter and the price reflects that: the a6100 will be available in October for only $750 (body only), $850 when paired with a 16-50mm lens, or $1100 when paired with the 16-55mm lens and a 55-210mm lens.
There are also two new E-mount zoom lenses on the way: the 16-55mm standard zoom and the 70-350mm F4.5-6.3 G OSS super-telephoto zoom . Here is what we know about these.
16-55mm standard zoom:
- Constant F/2.8 aperture
- 17 elements in 12 groups, two advanced aspherical elements to suppress aberration and three extra-low dispersion elements to reduce chromatic aberration
- Nano AR coating to reduce flare and ghosting
- 9-blade circular aperture for beautiful bokeh
- XD Linear Motor (same as the G Master lenses) for fast and quiet AF and tracking
- Fluorine coated front element to resist smudges and dirt
- Dust and moisture resistant construction

- Available in October for $1,400
70-350mm F/4.5-6.3 G OSS super-telephoto zoom:
- Built in image stabilization
- 19 elements in 13 groups, including one aspherical lens, and three extra-low dispersion elements to reduce chromatic aberration
- Corner-to-corner G Lens image quality
- Circular aperture for bokeh
- XD Linear Motor (same as the G Master lenses) for fast and quiet AF and tracking
- Customizable focus hold button
- Dust and moisture resistant design
- Weighs 20.09 oz, making it one of the lightest 5x super-telephoto zooms
